Top 5 video call mistakes

A big part of my job consists of doing interviews and client calls via video conference, even before Covid 19. In total I have participated in over 1,500 video calls. Time and again I see people making the same mistakes that make it hard for them to get their message across. Avoid these 5 top mistakes and you will have a successful video call!

1) Not testing: this is the biggest mistake. We all are using new and unfamiliar platforms now, from Zoom over Teams to Personal or Business Skype. Each platform is different and you need to test them before the first call (or at least dial in 15 minutes early if it’s your first time on a particular platform).

2) Bad lighting: sitting in front of a window will cast your face in shadows. You should have a light in front of you (not behind you) so your face is well-lit and visible.

3) Not using a headset or earplugs. People will not understand you and there might be a echo/ acoustic feedback.

4) Sitting too close means your face is partially cut off. If only part of your face is visible, that’s not ideal. Move back a little. Ideally you should sit around 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) away from the camera.

5) Looking at yourself instead of looking at the camera. The self-view will distract you. Make sure you are positioned well, then turn off the self-view.
